In 2024 the operational agreement for the Laboratory of Ion Beam Physics (LIP) was renewed for another four-year period (2025-2028) by the LIP board of trustees (ETH Executive Board, D-PHYS, D-ERDW, D-USYS of ETH Zurich, and Eawag, Empa, PSI and WSL of ETH Domain). We would like to thank all our board members for their continued trust and support. We especially welcome our new board member D-USYS.
We are delighted that the long-standing collaboration with several groups from D-USYS has now led to their membership of the LIP board.
A highlight of 2024 was the return of the Bio-MICADAS to LIP. The system, initially installed in 2008 in California, was later moved to a biomedical company in Seattle, which ceased business in April 2024. We sent a team to dismantle and ship the system back to LIP, where it will serve as the basis for the new MIQ prototype system, a MICADAS equipped with an ion cooler for laser-induced isobar suppression.
This volume not only presents scientific projects carried out by LIP scientific and technical staff together with our collaborators, it also describes our commitment to teaching and apprenticeship and presents our annual statistics on machines, samples, scientific publications and outreach, and prizes for present and former LIP employees. With seven operational accelerator systems and one being in development, LIP covers an exceptionally broad and interdisciplinary spectrum of science and applications that is reflected in the main chapters of the annual report. Together with our valuable collaborators LIP scientists authored or co-authored more than 70 publications in international, peer reviewed journals, presented their results on national and international conferences, and contributed to teaching in many departments of ETH Zurich
and at other universities.
